908 Devices Inc., a pioneer of purpose-built handheld and desktop mass spec devices for chemical and biochemical analysis, has acquired privately-held RedWave Technology, a leading provider of portable FTIR spectroscopic analyzers for rapid chemical identification of bulk materials.

This acquisition provides 908 Devices with an expanded portfolio of handheld chemical analysis devices for forensic workflows that quickly detect and identify unknown solids, liquids, vapors, and aerosols at the point of need. In addition, RedWave bolsters 908 Devices’ desktop portfolio with a line of accessories for pharma process analytical technology (PAT) and industrial QC applications.

The acquisition means that 908 Devices’ portfolio now includes ProtectIR, XplorIR, and ThreatID. ProtectIR is a handheld FTIR designed for use in harsh environments, which can rapidly assess over 23,000 solid and liquid chemical threats, offering clear results in seconds.

XploreIR is a handheld gas detector, which can identify over 5600 unknown chemical threats in as little as four seconds. Its ability to continuously monitor and provide accurate ID of up to six components in real-time lends itself to high-threat operations, and its point mode can be used for isolated target intelligence.

ThreatID, a portable FTIR device, gives emergency and military responders the ability to accurately identify a vast range of chemical threats with a single, portable, battery-operated system. The device can identify powders, liquids, and gases.

Dr. Kevin J. Knopp, CEO and Co-founder of 908 Devices, commented, "We’re thrilled to welcome the RedWave team to 908 Devices. Our technology platforms are complementary as our forensics customers rely on both mass spec and FTIR analyzers to rapidly assess and monitor their environment for dangerous trace chemicals and bulk chemical hazards. RedWave Technology is a high growth and profitable company with innovative products that can immediately leverage our sales channel. RedWave is a strong fit and enables us to accelerate our strategic objectives."
