AAPS member and nanoscience leader honored with 2024 Kavli Prize
Longtime AAPS member, Robert S. Langer, rewarded for contributions including the development of the first nano-engineered materials for the controlled release of drug molecules

AAPS has announced that Robert S. Langer, Sc.D., FAAPS, is one of three 2024 Kavli Prize Laureates in Nanoscience. Recognized for his development of the first nano-engineered materials for the controlled release of drug molecules, his work in this area has resulted in advancements in treatments for aggressive brain cancer, prostate cancer, and schizophrenia. Additionally, his research into small particles that contain protein antigens has been applied to the development of mRNA vaccines.
He shares in a $1 million USD prize with the other two recipients: Armand Paul Alivisatos, Ph.D., and Chad A. Mirkin, Ph.D.
Dr. Langer’s 30-year membership in AAPS has been punctuated with honors. He received AAPS’ highest honor, the Distinguished Pharmaceutical Scientist Award, in 1993, and became a Fellow of the association in 1995.
He has been an active member in the association, participating in the former Pharmaceutical and Drug Delivery Section and co-authoring articles published in Pharmaceutical Research.

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research, and The Kavli Foundation (USA) partner to award the Kavli Prize, which honors scientists for breakthroughs in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. Three $1 million USD prizes are awarded every other year in each of the three fields. Kavli Prize Laureates are selected by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters based on recommendations from three independent prize committees consisting of members nominated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Sciences, the Max Planck Society of Germany, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Society (UK).
