AB SCIEX Launches New Mass Spectrometry System to Fuel Scientific Discovery
25 May 2010AB SCIEX announces the launch of the AB SCIEX TripleTOF™ 5600 System, a groundbreaking mass spectrometry technology that is the fastest and most sensitive high-resolution mass spectrometer for high-performance qualitative and quantitative analysis.
This system represents a significant advancement in mass spectrometry, combining for the first time on a single platform the quantitative capabilities typically associated with triple quadrupoles and the qualitative capabilities of a high-resolution, accurate-mass system. The TripleTOF 5600 System is designed to enable new and better ways for scientists to conduct mass spectrometry experiments for a broad range of life science applications, such as discovering new drugs, detecting biomarkers, and aiding in food safety and environmental analysis. The company unveiled its next-generation system at the 58th American Society of Mass Spectrometry conference in Salt Lake City.
The AB SCIEX TripleTOF 5600 System delivers a series of new innovations, including SmartSpeed™ 100Hz Acquisition that is at least 5 times higher speed than any other high-resolution mass spectrometry system; Accelerator TOF™ Analyzer for high-resolution data at high speed with the industry’s highest sensitivity; and EasyMass™ Accuracy to achieve stable ~1ppm mass accuracy without continuous user calibration. These are significant advancements over currently marketed accurate-mass systems, which are limited to producing qualitative results with trade-offs in speed and sensitivity, as well as not being considered to have the reproducibility and precision needed for accurate quantitation.
This next generation of mass spectrometry instrumentation is the only system that combines the highest available sensitivity and speed with high resolution. Scientists can utilize it to generate better quality information from samples more easily than previously possible, increasing productivity and efficiency within their laboratories. The TripleTOF 5600 System also provides life scientists with access to powerful new workflows for comprehensive exploration, rapid profiling and high-resolution quantitation of complex samples that are not possible with any other mass spectrometer.
AB SCIEX is enabling these workflows with a suite of new application-specific software the company is also launching in conjunction with the new platform. Among them are MetabolitePilot™ Software for identifying metabolites in pharmaceutical research, and PeakView™ Software for processing and visualizing large amounts of mass spectrometry data quickly and simply, as well as new versions of MultiQuant™ Software for streamlined quantitation of small and large molecules, ProteinPilot™ Software for simplified proteomics; LipidView™ Software for lipidomics research and MarkerView™ Software for metabolomics and biomarker profiling analysis.
AB SCIEX developed its TripleTOF 5600 System in collaboration with scientists at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and the University of Geneva’s Mass Spectrometry Centre. These collaborations helped produce workflows for pharmaceutical research and disease research, now available for the life science community with the launch of this system.
Andy Boorn, Chief Operating Officer, AB SCIEX
“The launch of the AB SCIEX TripleTOF 5600 System is the latest example of our ability to innovate and pioneer breakthrough technology that will define how mass spectrometry will be conducted going forward. This state-of-the-art solution directly addresses an unmet need for faster, more accurate answers to a variety of challenges within analytical science that we are confident will power revolutionary discoveries within our customers’ laboratories around the world.”
Lorne Taylor, Director, Ontario Proteomics Methods Centre, Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital
“The AB SCIEX TripleTOF 5600 System significantly advances our mass spectrometry capabilities in biomedical research. We are using the system to conduct simultaneous quantitative and qualitative analyses of proteins and protein modifications at the highest levels of sensitivity, which is an approach that previously required two different types of instrumentation. The TripleTOF 5600 System enables us to rapidly detect a broader range of proteins and peptides, providing higher quality data than previously available and escalating our studies. This is essential for advancing our research on the underlying mechanisms of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.”
Gerard Hopfgartner, Ph.D., Professor and Scientist, University of Geneva’s Mass Spectrometry Centre
“Our hands-on experience with the AB SCIEX TripleTOF 5600 System is providing us with critical information about biological systems that we could not obtain in any other way. The speed of the instrument gives us the ability to look at more analytes in a shorter period of time and gain greater insight into complex samples. Because we are able to identify and quantify much more in a single sample, this technology allows us to develop new strategies to apply mass spectrometry for improving drug discovery and development.”
