This causes problems during standard methods of analysis of VOCs, in various environmental mediums, which will often involve lengthy sample preparation, followed by cumbrous and labored chromatography. Direct mass spectrometry (DMS) provides opportunities for simplification – or even elimination – of sample preparation, plus real-time or high-throughput sample analysis.
