Coolscope II continues the digital revolution

14 May 2007

Following a complete sell-out of the Coolscope I eye-piece-less microscope, Nikon Instruments has unveiled the Coolscope II. Building upon the strengths of the original model, the Coolscope II offers the same capabilities and ease of use as the original, but with added functions such as faster frame rate and USB functionality.

Saving the user time, the addition of the USB port enables images to be quickly saved then viewed on any PC, whilst the faster frame rate, up from 7.5 fps to 12 fps, provides a smoother and more continuous movement when panning across the sample.

The Coolscope II is an all-in-one box package incorporating a microscope and digital camera with web server capabilities. As with the original, the upgraded model can be operated via the Ergo Controller that provides an operational feel similar to that of an actual microscope. However the new model enables screen images to be moved around more smoothly, with greater convenience and ease of use.

The upgraded system offers both improved macro image illumination as well as a faster display update. The enhanced colour rendition, especially in the red end of the spectrum, ensures that more naturally coloured microscopic images are created, and the revolutionary ‘fly-eye’ lens array provides consistent illumination across the entire field of view. Ease of use is further exemplified by the Coolscope II’s compatibility with PictBridge software, allowing a direct connection to a printer without going through a PC.

As the new model allows images to be saved on a USB memory stick or ‘CompactFlash card’ ready for uploading to a networked PC, they can be used remotely at scientific congresses and study groups or as a study aid in the classroom and for consultation and referral via the network.

“We are confident that the updated Coolscope II will be as well received by our customers as the original model,” commented Chay Keogh, Marketing Manager, Nikon Instruments UK. “The increased frame rate and addition of the USB port will improve ease of use and functionality as well as further enhancing its capability for networking and sharing images. The Coolscope range demonstrates our commitment to delivering simple, ergonomic solutions to complex technical or practical problems.”

In 2004 the original Coolscope was awarded the R&D 100 Award, universally acknowledging it as being one of the most technologically significant products introduced during that year. The Coolscope II looks set to generate as much interest, if not more than its predecessor.
