Copley Scientific’s new Waste Shot Collector helps simplify inhaler testing

13 Aug 2007

The new Waste Shot Collector, Model WSC2, from Copley Scientific is a compact benchtop unit that efficiently captures the waste doses produced during inhaler testing. Suitable for both metered dose (MDI) and dry powder inhaler (DPI) applications, it minimises exposure to the test product and eliminates the need to use a ventilated area for testing.

Multi-dose MDIs and DPIs are tested for dose uniformity over the entire contents to verify consistent delivery. This involves the capture and measurement of ten doses throughout the life of the inhaler; the first three, the middle four and the last three. All other doses are fired to waste, conventionally into a fume cupboard or ventilated enclosure with appropriate drug capture facilities.

Used with a standard vacuum pump the WSC2 applies the same conditions during firing to waste that are applied during testing. In addition, the inlet of the WSC2 has the same profile as a USP induction port making it compatible with the mouthpiece adaptors used with delivered dose apparatus and cascade impactors. This makes it easy to ensure that all shots, whether to collection or waste, are discharged under identical conditions, improving test consistency.

Waste doses are captured in a disposable cartridge with the capacity to collect hundreds or thousands of shots. Material is trapped in an integral HEPA filter that retains 99.97% of particles over 0.3 microns in size.
