New documents are being added to the SelectScience® article library on a daily basis. This round-up includes articles related to our current Infectious Diseases Special Feature, as well as information on clinical QC, thyroid testing and urinary diagnostics.

1. Detection of Malaria by Scattergram

Two major types of malaria pathogens, P. falciparum and P. vivax, are the most frequently occurring and have very characteristic differences, not only in the course of the disease but also in the blood smear and results of the hematology analyzer. This application note demonstrates a method for the detection of malaria using Sysmex’s fluorescence-based technology.

2. Emerging Infectious Diseases: World’s Most Extensive Product Portfolio

This application note presents the broad range of ELISA kits available from EUROIMMUN for different diagnostic strategies of emerging infectious diseases; such as ZIKA virus and Chikungunya virus.

3. How Often is Right for QC?

ISO 15189 regulations don’t state a recommended QC frequency but they do recommend that “Quality Control materials shall be periodically examined with a frequency that is based on the stability of the procedure and the risk of harm to the patient from an erroneous result”. Read this guide to learn more about deciding on the QC frequency for your lab.

4. MYCOPLASMACHECK Mycoplasma Detection at GATC Biotech

This application note from GATC Biotech explains its MYCOPLASMACHECK service, designed to ensure your cell cultures remain reliably clean. The service uses a PCR-based assay to detect all contaminant mycoplasma species present.

5. Thyroid Hormones in Serum and Plasma using SPE Extraction and UHPLC-MS/MS Analysis

Concentrations of circulating thyroid hormones are routinely used to assess thyroid function and diagnose thyroid disease, for correct diagnosis it is essential that the methods for quantifying the thyroid hormones are sensitive and accurate. In this application note a method development is described to measure the free and totally thyroid hormones using a mixed-mode SPE extraction procedure and UHPLCMS/MS analysis.

6. Precast Gels for Urinary Protein Diagnostics: Electrophoresis of Urinary Proteins with SDS Urine Gels

Proteinuria, the presence of abnormal amounts of protein in urine, can be an indicator of kidney and kidney-related diseases. Detection of proteins in a urine sample can be performed with electrophoresis, this application note describes a method using SDS electrophoresis with polyacrylamide gel. The method provides high resolution images and has greater detection sensitivity than agarose gel electrophoresis.

7. Fast, Efficient Extraction of Genomic DNA from Blood Samples

This application note describes a method from Tecan and MACHEREY-NAGEL to produce reliable, high yield extraction of pure genomic DNA from blood samples. The method uses the NucleoMag® Blood 200 µL kit on a Freedom EVO® platform and is automated to reduce risk of contamination and time spent on preparation.
