Genetix has introduced a significantly enhanced version of the company’s CellReporter™ system, developed for quantification of cellular responses. The system offers a multi-application platform suitable for a wide range of cell-based assays such as cell cycle analysis, cytotoxicity studies and monitoring protein translocation.

These assays are used as biological models of physiological situations, for example when investigating the effect of drug candidates on a cancer cell model. Using the CellReporter system enables scientists to increase throughput of these assays without compromising image or data quality. In addition, the accuracy of the quantitative data can be substantially improved compared to conventional approaches. Flexible image analysis software identifies and analyzes each object, such as the cell nucleus, thereby distinguishing between the responses of individual cells within heterogeneous populations. Users can optimize and standardize image interpretation for each assay, view cell morphology and check data quality – for example to remove fluorescent debris that may compromise results.

The new CellReporter system has been developed in line with feedback from leading biotherapeutic and pharmaceutical companies, where the investigation and quantification of cellular responses to therapeutic candidates or other challenges are vital in drug discovery and development workflows. Analysis of individual cellular responses is also of great importance in the study of disease mechanisms, where cellular models are often used to understand biological processes.

Charles de Rohan, head of the Genetix Business Unit within Leica Microsystems, commented: “By working closely with research and development scientists in industry, we have developed a flexible, intuitive system that will play a fundamental role in drug discovery and disease mechanism studies. This has been a market-driven development which we strongly believe will fulfill the needs of our customers.”
