Grant unveils DNA/RNA UV cabinets/PCR workstation with built-in UV cleaner-recirculator

7 Nov 2007

Grant Instruments, a world-renowned supplier of scientific, life sciences and data acquisition products, has unveiled a new range of DNA/RNA UV cabinets/PCR workstations, including standard, economy and double units, which feature a novel patented UV cleaner-recirculator system.

This innovative UV cleaner-recirculator system increases the maximum density of UV light treating the entire internal air volume, generating 25m³ per hour air flow exchange to provide aseptic conditions for a variety of molecular biology and biochemical procedures. The recirculator can also provide constant cabinet decontamination making the environment suitable for demanding applications working with DNA/RNA, infectious and viral materials such as prions.

Part of the successful Grant-bio range of life science products, the new UV cabinets all feature an easy-to-use digital 24-hour timer for accurate control of UV exposure and a white lamp for workplace illumination. The UV cabinets are built to last and come with a 2-year warranty.

Three cabinets are available in the range. A budget Plexiglass model measuring 555 x 690 x 515mm and a more robust stainless steel/glass version with the same dimensions which also includes a microprocessor-based temperature control feature. The large capacity (1.2 x 0.52m) stainless steel/glass PCR double workstation provides additional space for equipment and accessories to allow for more comfortable and convenient working in PCR applications. This spacious cabinet also features dual 30 W UV lamps, an adjustable three position front opening panel for ease of access and three internal power sockets enabling small instruments to be run inside the cabinet.

“With the built-in UV-recirculator, our modern and easy-to-use benchtop cabinets are quality,
cost-effective alternatives to HEPA-filtered systems,” says Rob Thorburn, commercial manager
for Scientific Products at Grant. “By combining air treatment with UV surface irradiation, the
cabinets provide an efficient method of denaturing nucleic acids, destroying micro-organisms and limiting PCR reaction contamination.”

Grant’s comprehensive range of scientific products includes block heaters and coolers, baths and thermostatic circulators, re-circulating chillers, flow heaters, and, under the Grant-bio brand, microplate and micro-tube thermoshakers, UV cabinets, rockers, rotators and shakers, centrifuges and vortex mixers, including the newly-released V32 multi vortex mixer, which handles 32 tubes in three different sizes/combinations.

The Grant-bio series of products can be purchased worldwide through the extensive network of Grant
appointed laboratory distributors. A full range of accessories is available, making the Grant-bio
product range one of the most comprehensive on the market for sample preparation and treatment,
as well as representing excellent value for money.
