HORIBA ABX and GTA introduce Plateletworks

22 Oct 2006

Plateletworks is an entirely new concept for the UK. Sub distributed with exclusive rights by HORIBA ABX (UK) for GTA (UK) Ltd, and manufactured by Helena Laboratories, Beaumont, Texas, this simple, quick assay has been developed to both qualitatively and quantitatively assess platelet function.

Until now, the ability to assess platelet function in this way has not been possible. This test will prove invaluable to physicians in making informed decisions on how to treat a patient with impaired platelet function, either as a result of a congenital or acquired condition with an associated haemorrhagic condition, e.g. excess bleeding following, most notably, a cardiopulmonary bypass.

The Plateletworks test, when processed on a HORIBA ABX haematology analyser is completed in less than five minutes and requires no sample preparation; two agonist tubes are currently provided, one containing collagen, the other ADP, to which a small (1ml) whole-blood sample is added. In addition, automatic, closed-tube sampling optimises safety and ease-of-use for any operator without the need for any specialist training. The results provide the healthcare worker with information on total count, percentage aggregation or inhibition and functional count of the patient’s platelets at the point of care.

Currently being integrated into three UK evaluation sites; Frimley Park Hospital, Liverpool Cardiothoracic Centre (CTC) and Nottingham City, the Plateletworks kits will provide simple and quick testing of platelet function, enabling more efficient administration of valuable blood products and expensive drugs.
