LSM 5 Systems From Carl Zeiss With New Functions For Biomedical Research

8 Nov 2006

With Release 4.2 for all systems of the LSM 5 Family, Carl Zeiss MicroImaging is introducing additional functions that offer extended experiment possibilities to biomedical research.

The systems are adapted to the inverted AxioObserver.Z1 microscope recently launched on the market, but can also be operated on high-end upright microscopes from Carl Zeiss.

With its leading edge optics and outstanding stability, the fully motorized, inverted AxioObserver.Z1 microscope becomes a state-of-the-art live cell imaging system when used in combination with an LSM 5 LIVE or LSM 510 META microscope, the highly exact LSM DuoScan optical manipulation scanner and incubation accessories from Carl Zeiss. This makes advanced research in the life sciences both comfortable and reliable. Additional laser lines of 440 nm and 561 nm for the LSM 5 LIVE and the use of new, highly efficient filter technology in all systems of the LSM 5 Family offer further enhanced adaptation to the needs of users in biomedical research.

In addition to the LSM 5 MP specially configured for multiphoton microscopy, the Mk 4 models of the LSM 510 META provide a system that is specially tailored to the latest variants of fluorescent proteins.

The most recent addition to the LSM 5 Family is the attractively priced LSM 5 EXCITER system. The entry level model – equipped with premium quality electronics and uncompromising optics – offers a wide range of possibilities for multichannel image capture and rapid optical specimen manipulation in the excitation range from 405 nm to 633 nm.

All systems can be equipped with the fast, high resolution AxioCam HS microscope camera. Four attractive software functions are available on all systems: APD (avalanche photodiodes) imaging, LIVE microscanning, Image VisArt plus and Visual Macro Editor.

LSM 510 ConfoCor 3 systems with avalanche photodiodes now offer five imaging channels, two of which operate with particularly sensitive detectors. LSM 5 LIVE users benefit from a new microscanning capture mode that permits image formats of up to 1536 x 1536 pixels. The Image VisArt plus software package makes it possible to display different image sections or color channels simultaneously on all systems in both the transparency and surface modes. Up to three, freely definable section planes can be added to the image, and distance or angle measurements are possible in 3D. The optional Visual Macro Editor package offers the user a tool for the simple programming of highly complex image capture routines. The automatic focusing of the specimen and image capture control via the information in the image permit exceptional scanning strategies, and applications are performed automatically and at considerably greater speed.
