Dr Paul Kippax, product manager for diffraction systems at Malvern® Instruments, is one a of a group of international speakers who will present at the Indian Pharmaceutical Association’s symposium on Advances in Pulmonary and Nasal Drug Delivery, to be held on 4-5 October 2007 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Mumbai. In a talk entitled ‘Applying light scattering techniques to the characterization of nasal sprays and inhalers’ he will discuss the use of laser diffraction particle size analysis.

The rapid data acquisition rate achievable using laser diffraction for particle and droplet size analysis enables the capture of time-resolved measurements over a very wide size range. This makes it highly valuable for studying the device and formulation parameters affecting particle formation and dispersion. Applying this data to product development will be a key focus of the talk.

The Spraytec™ system from Malvern Instruments uses laser diffraction to measure particle size distributions and is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry for the analysis of nasal sprays and inhalers. Its ability to deliver real-time, high-speed measurements at an acquisition rate of up to 10 kHz enables the drug delivery profiles from different devices to be captured in exceptional detail. This rapid means of screening is highly complementary to established techniques such as cascade impaction, offering valuable insights into the processes of particle formation and dispersion during inhaler and nasal spray operation.
