The new Morphologi G3 automated particle characterization system from Malvern Instruments provides high quality, statistically significant particle size and shape information. Making its Pittcon debut in 2008 (March 2-7, New Orleans, USA), it will be exhibited alongside the company’s market-leading Zetasizer Nano particle characterization system with new flowmode capability, and SyNIRgi, the near infrared chemical imaging (NIR-CI) system designed for both research and routine applications.

Morphologi G3 provides microscope quality images and delivers statistically significant data through the rapid analysis of hundreds of thousands of particles, with little or no user intervention. As with any analytical procedure, good sample preparation is critical and a major development in the Morphologi G3 is the novel fully integrated dry powder dispersion system. Precise software control of all dispersion parameters ensures highly reproducible dispersions with consistent and controlled particle orientation. Sample is completely enclosed and the system allows easy dispensing from bulk materials, and the preparation of multiple aliquots.

For every particle measured there is a choice of 20 different parameters to describe size and shape. A new software tool compares and clusters data to find differences and similarities between multiple measurements. An interactive scattergram allows easy visualisation of measurement data and can be used to apply classifications and filters to group or exclude certain values based on any size or shape parameter.

Full automation using Standard Operating Procedures eliminates any user bias inherent in manual microscopy methods. SOPs allow straightforward method development and easy electronic transfer. Automatic calibration, conformance to 21CFR part 11 requirements and the availability of full IQ/OQ documentation ensure the system is accurate and repeatable, and all data is secure and validated.
