Meet the winners of the 2021 Scientists’ Choice Awards for analytical science

Scientific, technological and communications excellence has been celebrated at the Virtual Analytical Summit, with Eppendorf, Agilent and Thermo Fisher Scientific among those recognized

The world’s most innovative and effective analytical science technologies have been recognized at the SelectScience Virtual Analytical Summit 2021. Winners of the 2021 Scientists’ Choice Awards® for best new general lab, separations and spectroscopy products were announced live by SelectScience CEO Kerry Parker and Editor Dr. Matt McArdle to an online audience of industry leaders and scientists.

Now in their 14th year, the awards are unique in the industry as they are chosen by scientists. Each year, we invite analytical scientists around the globe to participate by nominating, reviewing and voting for the lab products that have had the greatest impact on their work. This year, more scientists than ever got involved — read on to reveal their chosen winners.

Best New General Lab Product of 2020

The award for Best New General Lab Product of 2020 goes to the Move It® adjustable spacing pipettes from Eppendorf, as voted for by scientists around the world.

Eppendorf redefined adjustable tip spacing pipettes following customer requests for an efficient and safe solution. This led to the unique design of the Move It® pipettes, conceived to accelerate and simplify synchronous pipetting and increase precision and durability.

Best New Separations Product of 2020

The award for Best New Separations Product of 2020 goes to the Thermo Scientific™ Vanquish™ Core Binary HPLC system, from Thermo Fisher Scientific.

This platform has been designed to boost productivity while maintaining the existing workflow, helping labs evolve to meet all current and future needs. Thermo Fisher Scientific built the system to provide scientists with accurate sample handling, flexibility, confidence, control and versatility.

Best New Spectroscopy Product of 2020

Designed to deliver robust performance and high versatility, the 6470B triple quadrupole LC/MS system, from Agilent Technologies, has been named this year’s Best New Spectroscopy Product of 2020.

With this system, Agilent aims to give researchers the confidence to tackle any type of analysis demand, promising best-in-class sensitivity, precision and scan speed. The 6470B triple quadrupole LC/MS holds multiple technological innovations, leading to maximized ionization and lower instrument downtime.

Reviewers’ Choice Analytical Science Company of the Year

Waters Corporation wins the coveted Reviewers’ Choice Award for Analytical Science Company of the Year in recognition of the consistently positive feedback it has received from scientists sharing their opinions via reviews on the SelectScience website over the past year.

Reviewers’ Choice Analytical Science Customer Service of the Year

In recognition of receiving consistently positive after-sales feedback from scientists around the globe via SelectScience reviews, Malvern Panalytical takes home the coveted customer service award.

Analytical Science Video Interview of the Year – in association with The Scientists’ Channel

This year’s winning video ‘New organic chemistry laboratories highlight the importance of a safe research environment’ is an interview with Prof. Stacy O’Reilly, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Butler University.

In this video, produced in association with Erlab, O’Reilly discusses her work in undergraduate organic chemistry teaching labs and how she hopes to push science forwards with her research into the synthesis of organometallic compounds.

Analytical Science Application eBook of the Year

The Analytical eBook of the Year Award goes to Thermo Fisher Scientific for ‘Drugs of abuse: Reliable analysis through Orbitrap mass spec’. This application compendium presents a guide to rapid, easy and accurate screening and quantitation of targeted and untargeted compounds using high-resolution accurate-mass LC-MS technology.

Analytical Science Editorial Article of the Year

This year’s winning article was titled ‘Striving for product quality assurance in the ‘wild west’ of medical cannabis’ and featured technology from Sartorius.

In an exclusive interview, Conner Griffeth, Level One Labs’ Chief Operating Officer and co-founder, discusses how the team planned to take advantage of the emerging market for cannabis testing and make patient safety a priority.

Analytical Science Webinar of the Year

This year’s winner of Webinar of the Year was presented by Andreas Borowiak, HPLC Columns Product Manager at Agilent Technologies.

The webinar, titled ‘Oh no! Not another boring webinar on column lifetime?’ and now available on demand, is intended as a masterclass in how to achieve the maximum column lifetime and performance from your LC columns.

Analytical Science Email of the Year

Mettler Toledo is the winner of Analytical Email of the Year for the email ‘By the Weigh: Lab Weighing Calendar 2021’. The winning email featured a free download of a 2021 laboratory weighing calendar and proved hugely popular with the SelectScience audience of scientists around the world.
