New e-Learning Programs from Savant

Academy Savant (Fullerton, CA, USA) has released two more modules in their series of e-Learning programs entitled “Practical Lab Skills”. These are now accessible through the Savant website.

Using live-action camerawork in a real lab, the programs show close-up demonstrations of the correct and safe method of carrying out laboratory procedures. The new titles are:

• Purification Techniques, comprising Gravity Filtration, Suction Filtration, Recrystallization, Sublimation, Refluxing

• Extraction Techniques, comprising Solvent Extraction, Soxhlet Extraction, Continuous Flow Extraction, Drying Samples

Each module contains about 30 minutes of video with voice-over that can be displayed as text and also printed out. Assessment is accomplished through automatically-scored multiple-choice quizzes and reviews with open-ended questions. There is also an extensive glossary of technical terms.

Licenses are offered both on-line and on CD, ranging from inexpensive short-term access on individual computers to permanent long-term network/intranet installations.
