New JEOL 120kV Transmission Electron Microscope for High Contrast, CryoTEM, and S/TEM Applications
10 Nov 2006JEOL USA introduces the latest in imaging technology and microscopy automation with its new 120 kV high resolution Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM).
This versatile instrument, the model JEM-1400, is optimized for biological, polymer, and materials research, combining both imaging and cryomicroscopy excellence. High contrast resolution is assured at 0.38nm point-to-point and 0.2nm lattice images.
The TEM can be quickly configured for either high contrast imaging or scanning transmission electron microscope (S/TEM) analysis. A micro-precision, drift-free Piezo goniometer stage provides superior sample positioning and an extended tilt range of +/- 70º for detailed 3-D tomography. A variety of quick-change specimen holders with multiple exchangeable tips are available for cryogenic sample transfer, automated multiple sample imaging, and analytical S/TEM.
Premier of New TEM Center Operating Environment
The compact JEM-1400 TEM enhances both comfort and ease of operation for both beginners and experienced microscopists. Key to the simplified operation of the JEM-1400 is the new TEM Center operating environment. The Windows®-based graphical user interface (GUI) displays TEM conditions, operation windows, digital CCD, S/TEM (bright field and dark field) images, and EDS elemental mapping data. JENIETM software, a set of tutorials, user guides, and a TEM navigation system, enhances the user experience.
Different modes of control can be selected depending on the operator’s expertise. For the beginning TEM user, color-coded icons, control switches and knobs, and simple commands guide basic operation and imaging. Advanced TEM users will appreciate the functionality and adaptability of the microscope for changing experimental requirements of the imaging lab and multiple users. Each user can customize and log into his or her personal operating environment.
Remote Operation from PC or PDA
The JEM-1400’s TEM Center operating environment also makes it possible to operate the TEM and observe images from separate locations via Ethernet or cellular phone. Wireless broadband users will be able to view TEM images from their PDA.
JEM-1400 Sales Preceded U.S. Introduction
The first USA installation of the JEM-1400 will be in the School of Biology at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, where it will be used in biomedical research conducted by Dr. Ingeborg Schmidt-Krey with a specific focus on crystallization, structure and function of eukaryotic membrane proteins. Additional installations are slated for early 2007. JEOL USA will be exhibiting at Fall MRS, Boston, MA (November 28-30, 2006) and American Society of Cell Biology, San Diego, CA (December 9-13, 2006), with a focus on this new instrument for both materials and biological applications.
