Promega announces the release of a suite of four STR kit configurations designed to fulfill latest DNA database standards established in Europe. With the new PowerPlex® ESX and ESI Systems, forensic laboratories can choose the format that best meets their needs and provide consistent data across borders.

The PowerPlex ESX and ESI Systems detect the European Standard Set and other routinely tested loci, plus the five loci recently recommended by the ENFSI/EDNAP committees. Each configuration offers the option to detect SE33. Multiple configurations allow customers the flexibility to test the loci that are relevant to their region and choose the primer design that will provide the optimal results for their specific lab.

PowerPlex ESX contains the five new ENFSI recommended loci as mini STRs while the PowerPlex ESI contains the standard European loci as mini STRs. Both systems are offered with and without SE33.

Complete Profiles with Challenging Sample Types
A new buffering system gives the kits increased tolerance to common inhibitors. The use of mini STR loci, (amplicon size <150 bp), increases sensitivity to obtain full profiles from low-level and degraded DNA samples. Customers can expect to get more results and more complete profiles with even the most challenging sample types.

Alpha Test Labs Favor New STR System
During the last eight months, the kits were tested at twenty five sites in fourteen countries. The laboratories tested overall product performance, including sensitivity and robustness against inhibited samples. A majority of testers were able to detect profiles with as little as 30 pg of DNA. Multiple testers planned to integrate the new systems into their processes.

Easier Database Sharing and Standardization
The PowerPlex ESX and ESI Systems use a new 5-dye chemistry to detect up to 17 loci and contain all necessary components to run the STR assay, including an Internal Lane Standard. The combination of multiple format availability along with improved power of discrimination and performance will make the PowerPlex ESX and ESI Systems a useful tool in database sharing and standardization throughout Europe and around the globe.
