Pioneering cardiovascular care and emergency medicine with Dr. Frank Peacock

Dr. Frank Peacock, Research Director for Emergency Medicine and professor of Emergency Medicine and Associate Chair, Baylor College of Medicine

Dr. Frank Peacock is a respected physician in cardiovascular care and emergency medicine. With an extensive career that spans multiple leadership roles, including being the current Chief Executive Officer of Comprehensive Research Associates, a commercial research organization. Dr. Peacock has made significant contributions to improving patient outcomes in acute care settings. Dr. Peacock currently serves as a Professor of Emergency Medicine and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Thought leader in biomarker research and point-of-care testing

As a thought leader in biomarker research, Dr. Peacock has been studying cardiac biomarkers, particularly troponin, which plays a crucial role in diagnosing heart attacks. His research has explored the transition from contemporary to high-sensitivity troponin assays, a change that has revolutionized the field of point-of-care testing.

In an interview with SelectScience®, Dr. Peacock says, "My hospital has just shifted from contemporary troponin to high-sensitivity troponin, which increases the ability to detect low levels by an order of magnitude." He explains that high-sensitivity troponin allows for much quicker, more reliable results that are critical in emergency medicine. However, Dr. Peacock also noted the challenges for traditional laboratory testing, emphasizing the upcoming the shift toward point-of-care devices will require new protocols and innovations in lab management.

Contributions to cardiovascular and emergency medicine

Dr. Peacock's research and clinical interests focus on acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure, and rapid patient disposition, areas that are critical in emergency medical care. Over the years, he has authored more than 850 peer-reviewed publications, predominantly on cardiovascular conditions and emergency medicine, positioning him as a leading voice in this field.

Dr. Peacock's work has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Best Research Paper Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians, which he has won three times, and the Codman Award from the American Association of Group Practice. He is also the recipient of the Ray Bahr Award from the American College of Cardiology, further cementing his influence in cardiovascular research and care.

High-profile clinical trials

Dr. Peacock has served as the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on several high-profile national and international clinical trials, such as PRONTO, ADHERE-EM, IMPACT, CHOPIN, CLUE, FASTTRACK, and TRUE-HF. His role in these studies has been instrumental in advancing treatment protocols for conditions like acute heart failure and improving the management of cardiovascular emergencies.

Notably, Dr. Peacock is the global PI for the HEADSMART II trial, which focuses on groundbreaking research in traumatic brain injury biomarkers. His clinical trial work has led to significant innovations in how emergency departments diagnose and treat acute conditions, helping to set new standards for patient care.

Bloodless diagnostics is the future

One of Dr. Peacock’s most exciting areas of focus is bloodless testing, a revolutionary concept that could drastically alter the future of diagnostic medicine. Utilizing technologies like infrared lasers to measure blood without drawing samples, bloodless testing has the potential to reduce healthcare professionals' exposure to blood and increase the speed of diagnostic results, especially in pre-hospital settings like ambulances.

Dr. Peacock envisions a future where patients can receive lab results within minutes of being transported to the hospital, streamlining emergency care and minimizing delays in treatment. He believes that this technology will transform the role of lab directors, as they will need to manage and oversee the use of advanced point-of-care machines distributed across healthcare settings.

Dr. Frank Peacock’s involvement with #CLINICAL24 underscores his commitment to advancing emergency and cardiovascular care through innovation and collaboration. As a CLINICAL24 Ambassador, Dr. Peacock connects with healthcare professionals worldwide, sharing his vast expertise in clinical trials, biomarkers, and point-of-care testing. By participating in this initiative, Dr. Peacock helps foster a global exchange of knowledge and solutions, driving forward improvements in patient outcomes and the future of emergency medicine.
