In the pharmaceutical industry, volatile organic compounds are typically essential to the production of pharmaceuticals but are unwanted in the final products. USP <467> defines the acceptable limits of these residual solvents, classifies them into three categories, and provides procedures for their analysis.

In this SelectScience webinar, now available on demand, Cassie Eisele and Abbey Fausett, from Agilent Technologies, introduce the new 8697 Headspace Sampler from Agilent and explore how this technology can be used for USP <467> residual solvent and blood alcohol analysis.

Read on for highlights from the Q&A discussion and find out how new features released with this instrument can help you create a smoother GC workflow and get the results you need when and where you need them.

Q: Can the 8697 Headspace Sampler be used with my 7890 GC?

CE: With the integrated communication with the GC, the 8697 is only compatible with our newest generation of GCs, so the 8890, 8860, and Intuvo 9000 GCs. If you do have an older Agilent GC, say, a 7890 or 6890, then the 7697A Headspace Sampler is a great fit for either of those.

Q: How does the 8697 Headspace Sampler connect to my computer for software control?

CE: Connection to the computer is actually through the GC. So unlike previous generations of Agilent Headspace, the 8697 doesn't directly connect to the computer. It connects to the GC, and then the GC, which has the integrated intelligence with the headspace, is what connects to the computer and that's where you get the software control.

Q: Can I use my 7697A headspace methods with the 8697 Headspace Sampler?

CE: Yes, you can. The 7697A and 8697 use the same method parameters. So if you have a method that you've developed on the 7697A, you can use those same exact method parameters and run them on the 8697.

Q: Does the 8697 Headspace Sampler use the same consumables as the 7697A, such as the same sample loop?

CE: It does. So the 8697 has the same flow path as the 7697A, and so the consumables between the two are common. So the same consumables that you're used to using with the 7697A, you can continue to use those on the 8697.
