The SPECTRONIC™ 200 from Thermo Fisher Scientific is a new visible spectrophotometer that incorporates the latest optical and detector technologies specific to the needs of academic and industrial quality control laboratories.

Designed for teaching and basic testing applications, the Thermo Scientific SPECTRONIC 200 is a cost-effective instrument that delivers fast full-wavelength scan data and multi-standard quantitative analysis for excellent performance in low- and mid-level academic, food and beverage, wastewater and chemical laboratories. Designed specifically for these challenging environments, the SPECTRONIC 200 has a small footprint, requires little maintenance and is simple to set up and use.

The SPECTRONIC 200 is the powerful successor to the more than 500,000 Thermo Scientific SPECTRONIC 20 and GENESYS 20 spectrophotometers that are a familiar feature in laboratories around the world for simple fixed wavelength analysis. With its ability to provide fast full range scanning without the need to connect to an external computer, the instrument excels in its price range. The onboard controls and full-color display reduce bench space requirements and offer an intuitive navigation experience similar to a cell phone - an interface that is easy to learn, even for inexperienced users. For laboratories with established methods, protocols or SOPs, emulation modes mimic the SPECTRONIC 20 and GENESYS 20 for easy method transfer. Compact, simple and containing no moving parts, the SPECTRONIC 200 is low-maintenance, designed to save time and money.

Its user-centered design is demonstrated by features such as the removable sample compartment and integrated cuvette rack shelves. Corrosion-resistant, it allows for easier cleaning compared to legacy and competing instruments, as the sample compartment can be removed and rinsed in a sink. Results are displayed on a full color LCD graphics screen with variable angle positioning, providing improved clarity of information display. USB ports support memory devices for method storage and connection to USB printers for added convenience.

Mike Jost, vice president and general manager for molecular spectroscopy, microanalysis and surface analysis at Thermo Fisher Scientific, comments: “The market requires instruments that feature advanced technologies and a modern design. For more than 50 years, the SPECTRONIC name has been synonymous with longevity, reliability and quality. Building on these qualities, the new Thermo Scientific SPECTRONIC 200 offers fast, full-wavelength scanning capability at an affordable price. The system has been designed for purpose, combining features to provide a durable and easy-to-use spectrophotometer. For existing users of the instrument’s predecessors, the SPECTRONIC 200 offers an easy upgrade path by including user interface emulation modes in its on-board software platform.”
