As the quote by Des McHale in the title illustrates; you need to be careful with averages. Sometimes you want more than average, sometimes you might want to look at the individual case to get the full picture. This especially holds true for cell populations: heterogeneity of cells within a population provides valuable insights in cancer research, immunology, stem cell biology, and many more. In addition, single cells analysis is critical in forensics and diagnostics.
