Students entering the new Hemenway Hall addition this fall at Framingham State University will enjoy eight new chemistry laboratories, each exclusively using filtered fume hoods that feature Erlab’s GreenFumeHood Filtration Technology. Erlab’s team recently finished installing the forty-nine filtered fume hoods needed for their Organic, Inorganic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry teaching laboratories. Each filtered fume hood is outfitted with Erlab’s superior Neutrodine filtration technology which is ideal for multidisciplinary handlings, is designed to address the ever-increasing requirements for safety and energy-efficiency, has best-in-class detection technology, and real-time communication for security and monitoring via PC, tablet or smartphone.

The design team’s decision to use filtered fume hoods provides a safe working environment for the students and offers significant first cost and operational cost savings for the school. The chemistry involved is easily handled by Erlab’s Green Fume Hood Filtration Technology. The combinations of acids, bases, and solvents used by the students will be fully absorbed by the Neutrodine filters, which will last greater than 2 years as have been proven at other installations with similar chemical usage.

First Cost Savings: The mechanical systems were reduced by 25%, thereby lowering their costs by over $917,000 and providing a net savings of over $330,000 on the project.

Energy Savings: The reductions in exhaust air and make-up air, coupled with a long filter life will save over $39,000 annually in operating costs and help the project achieve LEED® Silver.

Erlab and its partners, Air Master Systems and Labconco, understand the challenges of constructing a new lab, renovating an old lab, or adding on to an existing lab, and offer a solution that is ideal for the majority of environments. This made the Green Solution Hood by Air Master Systems (featuring Erlab’s GFH Filtration Technologies) a key factor in the design of Framingham State University’s new laboratories.
