Thermo Introduces the IEC CL Centrifuge Series

13 Jun 2006

Thermo Electron Corporation, the world leader in analytical instruments, today introduced its IEC CL Series, a family of centrifuges for clinical and research labs available in both ventilated and refrigerated versions.

Consisting of 9 models with capacities ranging from 0.5 to 3 liters, Thermo’s IEC CL Series leverages Thermo’s 105-year history with the IEC centrifuge product line to deliver a full line of compact, user-friendly centrifuges designed to meet the performance and price needs of clinical and research laboratory personnel who perform protocols such as body fluid separation, microplate and micro-volume processing, and cell culture.

With the new IEC CL Series, Thermo has introduced unique, innovative features that make operation easy while enhancing operator safety and confidence. The unique Auto-Lock® rotor exchange system on the CL30 and CL31 models enables secure rotor changes within 5 seconds, making it fast, safe and convenient for users to switch between protocols requiring different sample formats. A broad range of safe, bio-contained accessories protects users by ensuring that hazardous materials are properly contained. ”Quick recall” keys on the user-friendly control panel provide instant access to users’ most frequently-used protocols. Bright, easy-to-read digital displays enable continuous monitoring of the run, even from across the lab.

The full range of models available in Thermo’s IEC CL Series is designed to address the needs of the small medical lab through the higher-volume research lab and clinical environment:

  • The Thermo IEC CL10 spins swing-out rotors at 4,000 rpm and fixed-angle rotors up to 6,500 rpm. This quiet, compact unit produces only 57 dB, less than half the noise of present models on the market. Combined with its 4 x 135 ml capacity, the IEC CL10 is ideal for small laboratories and medical offices.
  • The ventilated Thermo IEC CL30 and refrigerated IEC CL30R low speed centrifuges offer capacities of 1.2 liters and speeds of up to 6500 rpm, providing an excellent cost-per-tube processing efficiency by spinning up to 60x standard vacutainers or 16 x 50 mL conical tubes in a single run.
  • The ventilated Thermo IEC CL31 and refrigerated IEC CL31R Multispeed centrifuge offer higher speeds in 1.2 liter units with an expanded rotor set to provide greater flexibility for research and clinical applications. Equipped with the 48 x 2 mL carbon fiber rotor, the CL31 and CL31R can spin 48 microtubes at 23,000 x g, providing an outstanding cost-per-tube ratio.
  • The ventilated Thermo IEC CL40 and refrigerated IEC CL40R 3 liter benchtop centrifuges can process 108 x standard vacutainers, 28 x conical tubes or 16 x microplates, offering amazing throughput and speed for large clinical laboratories and hospitals.
  • The ventilated Thermo IEC FL40 and refrigerated IEC FL40 floor standing centrifuges offer the same speed and capacity as the CL40/CL40R in a convenient, compact floor model that offers mobility and excellent ergonomics.

The Thermo IEC CL Centrifuge Series benefits from hundreds of years of combined experience within Thermo’s R&D teams. This expertise has produced exceptional performance and quality at the right price, from the CL10/CL10R for small medical office applications to the CL40/CL40R and FL40/FL40R for large, busy hospitals and clinical laboratories.
