Thorough, residue free cleaning is essential for carrying out reliable processes in your laboratory. This applies to both labs and production facilities. Everything that comes into contact with chemicals or biological substances must be free of impurities or contaminants before and after use.
In a recent webinar, Annett Schneider, Global Product Manager of Safety Products and Essentials at Merck KGaA, presented the characteristics of lab cleaning processes affected by regulations, standards and individual environments and requirements. The webinar also covered essential application topics and provided guidelines on how to carry out daily cleaning effectively, safely and with a focus on environmental protection.

How long should the parts remain in the cleaning bath?
AS: Depending on your contamination, the surface and the degree of cleanliness. These are the determining parameters for the length of application. In our experience, with Extran® MA, it’s normally no longer than 2 hours.
Could I reuse the cleaning bath?
AS: This also depends on the cleaner you are using. If you use a high concentration cleaner with a good stability and you prepare your cleaning bath, you can use it for a long time without a noticeable decrease in the cleaning effect.
What do you recommend for rinsing?
AS: Depending on the cleaning application and the used detergent a neutralization step might be necessary.After cleaning is finished and after this neutralization step, rinse with tap water first and then do a final rinse with demineralized water to finalize the cleaning process.

AS: The mentioned regulations I showed in my presentation in this webinar are listed with the official European Union numbering. Whenever you need to step into detail for these regulations you can easily use the numbering to find the regulations on the web.
Where could I get support in finding the best suitable cleaner for my application?
AS: The internet has a wide range – I would always recommend having documents made available by the suppliers of your cleaner. There are a lot of documents available on their web pages. For example, you can use sigmaaldrich.com or contact your local supplier of the cleaner, e.g. Merck or MilliporeSigma, and ask them about Extran® the reliable cleaner portfolio.
