NIGHTSEA

NIGHTSEA’s roots are in underwater fluorescence exploration and photography. Founder/President Dr. Charles Mazel started out making equipment purely for his own enjoyment to explore for fluorescence in the sea while SCUBA diving at night. This simple curiosity led to a research career studying the optical properties of marine organisms and developing new tools for in situ research. “The challenge of working underwater in the dark is a great motivator for making simple, reliable gear that just plain gets the job done. This mindset translates into everything NIGHTSEA makes for laboratory and field equipment."

NIGHTSEA was originally founded to provide lights and filters that enable recreational and scientific divers and photographers to experience the beauty of underwater fluorescence, and the company still supplies this market. With the discovery that the fluorescent proteins in corals were a variant of the magical green fluorescent protein originally found in jellyfish it was a natural transition to supply variants of the underwater lights and viewing equipment to the laboratory research community.

NIGHTSEA’s fluorescence excitation flashlights and matching filter glasses are used to quickly screen and sort macroscopic organisms such as transgenic mouse pups, while its modular Stereo Microscope Fluorescence Adapter system gives existing stereo microscopes fluorescence capability at very low cost, enabling applications in sorting/screening, education, and more.

We continue to develop new solutions to investigate the fluorescent world around us, both above and below the surface of the ocean. We turn these into practical tools that enable researchers, explorers, sport divers, photographers/videographers, and others to enter this hidden spectral world and return with images and knowledge.
