Great instrument for blood gases, carboxyhemoglobin and methemoglobin

Application Area:

Testing of blood gases

We have been using this analyzer for a couple years with no issues. We don't even mind that it is not a portable hand held analyzer because it can do so much for us. All results are interfaced to EPIC Beaker that is the biggest reason it is in the lab not bedside. We had been cited for QC frequency on our previous analyzer. The ABL90 solved that with it's internal QC that uses the same pathway as the sample.

Great results, great instrument, and easy to follow instructions.

Analyse blood gas

This intrument is so easy to use, we have never had any issues with it. It give reproductible results and we don't have to use as many capillary specimens as we used to.

Within 2 blood gas labs in a busy POCCU & ITU complex

We have switched from our five, 15-year-old ABL 825s to ABL90s. Pre-installation we had excellent support from Radiometer. They “trained the trainers” (ITU Education team) who then rolled this out to staff on the new ABL90s. Most staff are designated as “users” with no access to replace sensors/solution packs which simplified training. 80%+ staff were trained prior to the “Change day”. We did a total switch in one morning with all the old analyzers "out" and the new ones" in" with trainers available to support staff. The change for users went very smoothly. As ever, there was a learning curve for the team as we put our own training into practice and developed systems to monitor usage/accuracy. Results are consistent between analyzers and staff feedback over their confidence in the results is high. We have quickly developed our own confidence to handle and resolve any issues which might arise. There is much less maintenance than on our old analyzers and therefore much-reduced downtime The Radiometer tender was certainly very competitive and we are very happy with them as our partner in delivering this service. The analyzers have been in situ since September and we are still evaluating running costs. The final comment (and the most important) is that staff love the new analyzers and we have had 100% good feedback. The main complaint has been that (as the analysis is so quick) there is less time to check their phones than with the old analyzers.

Point of care 'mini-lab' for acute admissions

This analyzer is used in a remote situation where there is no laboratory facility available out of hours (OOH). The analyzer has enabled quick availability of urea and creatinine results alongside blood gases. (It replaced a standard (old) ABL90 Flex). Previously, to get urea and creat results OOH, a sample had to be centrifuged and run on a separate instrument. This extra process was fiddly, time-consuming and prone to error. The motorized sample port has removed the possibility of the port being opened whilst the analyzer is busy and also prevents the port being inadvertently left open (both of which did occur occasionally leading to problems and delays). The improvements make the analyzer even more suitable for use at the point of care. The analyzer is very reliable. Currently nursing staff and some ward support staff are trained in its use and basic maintenance/trouble-shooting. Trouble-shooting is easy to undertake due to the step-by-step on screen instructions and demonstrations. The after sales care has been excellent. Contact is quick and easy with 24 hour support if needed. Plus, using aqure, engineers can log in remotely to assist with issues. The value for money is very good. In a very low through-put situation (e.g. performing less than 300 tests a month/10 tests a day), consideration may have to be given as to the number of tests done vs the on-board stability of the sensor and reagents (which is 14 days, rather then 28 days as for the Standard ABL90 consumables). However, with the added benefit of urea and creat being available, and the improvements over the ABL90, this can be easily offset. This could potentially be improved further, and the market I'm sure would expand, if a 100 test sensor cassette becomes available in the future.

The ABL90 FLEX PLUS blood gas analyzer is designed for point-of-care testing in busy clinical environments, such as the ED, ICU, NICU or the delivery room where fast results from a very small blood sample are vitally important to make critical diagnostic decisions. The ABL90 FLEX PLUS analyzer gives you reliable results in only 35 seconds on 19 parameters–blood gas, electrolytes, metabolites and co-oximetry–from a syringe, capillary tube or test tube–all on one blood sample of only 65 µL.

This extended panel of critical parameters within blood gas testing gives you more clinical insight here and now, allowing you to act on results and make life-saving diagnostic decisions.
