This is a review of Hach's new Cl-17sc free/total chlorine monitor, a replacement for the legacy Cl-17. Overall, the equipment performs well. The Cl-17sc has a smaller enclosure that takes less space for mounting. The are more options for the display, but the display is no longer integrated into the unit - an SC200 or newer SC4500 controller must be paired to the unit for control and display, adding another expense. The Cl-17sc can be connected to some other companies' controllers, but I am not sure how well that works. This newer model also requires the identical reagent kit. The equipment is dependable and holds calibration well. However, there are caveats. In speaking with Hach's field service representative, he informed me that the newer model is much more dependent on electronic internals than the older model. Preventative maintenance will be a bit pricier as a result. This does allow greater versatility, and allows more devices to be simultaneously interconnected, yet it also makes the Cl-17sc more sensitive to heat and humidity. Readings from a remote control or remote sensor may be slightly affected as a result.

Municipal water treatment and distribution
We use Cl17s in multiple locations. Since I've been working with them, there seems to be an issue with the newer style colourimeter. They have removed the LED port so you can't see if it is illuminated or not. We've also had multiple issues with erratic low readings that required the colourimeter to be replaced. In the past couple of years, I've had to send about three of our units out for repairs more than once and for the same problem. I don't know if Hach's quality control has suffered or if the parts are just being made cheaply. On another note, in 2019 we started having weird issues with new reagents. I reached out to Hach and they notified me that there was a recall on a certain batch of reagents. Not cool, would have been nice to get that info before we had compliance issues. Long and short, I'm not impressed with these analzyers or Hach. I'm very hesitant to even try one of the newer models with the SC line of controllers.
