Acylation, an alternative to silylation, allows the conversion of compounds with active hydrogen such as -OH, -SH, and -NH into esters, thioesters and amines, respectively. A very popular example of this method is the insertion of perfluoracyl groups to enable electron capture detection (ECD). Carbonyl groups adjacent to halogenated carbons enhance the ECD response.
A further benefit of acylation is the formation of fragmentation-directing derivatives for GC/MS analysis. Acylation reagents can be classified into two main groups: fluoro acid anhydrides and fluoracylimidazoles.
