The widespread use of these chemicals has led to fears of a link between exposure to such chemicals and the increased incidence of neurological disorders in children. The assay uses Neuroscreen (NS-1) cells, a subclonal of PC-12 cells, which when stimulated with nerve growth factor (NGF) differentiate forming neurites. Automated image cytometry allows quantitative morphological measurements of the fluorescently stained NS-1 cells to determine potential effects on neurodevelopment.
