Freedom EVO® for 3D cell culture
Tecan has automated real 3D cell culture technologies on the Freedom EVO platform to provide robust and reliable solutions for cell biologists, helping to improve cell-cell interactions, generate complex, tissue-like 3D structures, and produce more biologically relevant results.
Automation of real 3D cell culture technologies on the Freedom EVO platform is helping cell biologists to overcome the limitations of 2D culturing techniques.
Cells grow naturally in a 3D environment, and conventional cell culturing techniques – where cells are grown in 2D monolayers – limit the biological relevance of cell-based assays, as cell morphology, proliferation, metabolism and expression profiles are very different compared with in vivo. Researchers around the world have worked for years to overcome these obstacles and develop a variety of 3D cell culture formats that mimic the in vivo environment.
Cell biologists benefit from the robust, reliable solutions provided by automating real 3D cell culture technologies on the Freedom EVO platform. Cell-cell interactions are improved, complex, tissue-like 3D structures can be generated, and experimental results are more biologically relevant. Both scaffold-based – RAFT™, 3D Bloom® and Alvetex® – and scaffold-free – GravityPLUS™ – formats can be used, enabling true 3D culture growth in an easy-to-use format. Scaffold-based formats provide a natural or synthetic supporting structure – such as polystyrene, hydrogel or collagen – for cells to grow on. Scaffold-free formats use either microfluidics or gravity to force cells to form microtissues (eg. hanging drop).
