Shel Incubator quality has gone downhill
Microbiology Incubator
Our laboratory has used Shel Lab Incubators for decades and have really enjoyed them for their ease of use and longevity. However, we purchased a Shel Incubator in July of 2022 that started giving us problems within a few weeks of arrival. It developed a squealing noise and the technicians came out and replaced the fan. After that, it was quiet, but every couple of weeks the temperature would drop just below the compliance range for our samples and we'd have to call our Clients and request resamples. We recalibrated it and continued to use it, but the temperature would drop every few weeks. We stopped using it for compliance samples. Just after the warranty was up, it dropped temperature dramatically. We tried the fixes with their Tech support, but were told it needed a new Control Board, which would cost about half the price of a new incubator. Also, there are apparently no technicians in our area, so we would have to hire an outside company to install it. So, it appears that Shel has joined the ranks of companies making "disposable" products. We still have several of their incubators, with the oldest being from 2002, and those other incubators continue to provide solid service. However, I don't trust buying a new incubator from them.

Laboratory and shelf life testing
These are the most reliable stability lab ovens I have ever used. Probably due to the heating elements being placed evenly throughout the unit, even in the doors. The temperature zones are all within 1-1.5°C of each other and the temperature stays very consistent and even throughout the units. They also run very efficiently as well. Excellent design.

We purchased two Shel Lab GI7 incubators seven years ago. They have worked perfectly and have not needed any repairs so I cannot speak about after sales services.

SHEL LAB general purpose incubators deliver a degree of temperature uniformity usually found only in more expensive, application specific models
This high level of performance is due to a precise microprocessor controller and a unique warm air jacket design. Triple wall construction allows heated air to circulate within an open plenum between the inner chamber and exterior walls. This design does not require blowers or fans within the incubator chamber where samples are susceptible to cross contamination and the drying effects of convection. Five strategically placed heating elements, including a heated outer door, ensure uniform heating, even when the incubator chamber is fully loaded.
