UVP Mini UV Lamps
Mini four-watt UV Lamps are battery operated and are excellent as a portable lamp for field use. Manufactured of impact-resistant plastic which resists fading or cracking. Mini UV Lamps are small enough to fit in a pocket.
Field work in volcanic caves (looking for microbe luminescence in dark environments) - for NASA
Purchased two of these lamps for field work in lava caves - we're using them to distinguish individual colonies growing on cave walls. They were easy to use and carry. I was concerned that the bulbs looked delicate but they have survived 2 field seasons so far. I can imagine how to improve the lamps - (1) add a recharging feature, (2) increase eye protection with a lock so it's more difficult to slide the protective cover over the bulb, (3) Add a filter to focus the illumination on the wavelength of interest (i.e., narrow the bandwidth range). Overall, these were the only small, affordable field lamps I found at the mid- to deep UV illumination...and I have been satisfied.
