The VIPR II reader is our second generation multichannel fluorescence plate reader with integrated liquid handling equipment for Na+, K+, Cl-, Ca2+, and ligand-gated ion channel screens. The VIPR II reader detects changes in cellular membrane electric potential (or voltage) as rapid fluorescent signals from Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET)-based Voltage Sensor Probes. The VIPR II reader simultaneously measures the emission signals from two voltage-sensing probes and transduces them into a ratiometric fluorescence readout. The reader simultaneously measures fluorescence at two wavelengths from eight wells of a 96-well or 384-well plate before, during, and after the introduction of a liquid sample (liquid addition protocols are used to trigger changes in membrane potential in living cells). The instrument is compatible with high throughput screening and finds an important application in ion channel research and drug discovery.
