Bromate in Water and Drinking Water

Bromate can occur in drinking water treatment in the oxidation of bromide-containing waters with ozone. Bromates are carcinogenic, these substances in drinking water are undesirable and there are limits for drinking water in many countries. The EU drinking water directive prescribes as a maximum allowable concentration of Bromate in drinking water by 0.010 mg/l BrO₃^- (or 10 μg/l BrO₃^-). The same limit is also in the WHO guideline for drinking water. Local regulations often prescribe these limit values too.
