Orthogonal and complementary analytical techniques in biotherapeutic research and development

11 May 2023

In this application note, Yokogawa Fluid Imaging Technologies discusses the importance of obtaining accurate critical quality attribute (CQA) data for biotherapeutic research. Researchers can use both complementary and orthogonal analytical techniques to obtain reliable CQA data. An orthogonal technique characterizes at least one common application-relevant CQA but uses a different measurement technique. Orthogonal techniques are valuable as they provide independent evaluation of a single attribute, allowing researchers to cross-check and verify their findings to control for bias and other issues with data collection. FlowCam® instruments provide subvisible particle count, size, and morphology information that can serve as an orthogonal or complementary technique for obtaining accurate CQA data in biotherapeutic research.
