Validation of Stericup filtration systems for stem cell culture

6 Aug 2023

In this application note, Merck demonstrates that microporous filtration, despite being the chosen method to prepare and minimize contamination in cell culture processes, raises apprehension about potential loss of valuable factors and addition of harmful components to growth media. This concern is particularly relevant in stem cell culture due to the cost of factors, sensitivity of cells to additives, and extended culture durations. The study reveals that using a polyethersulfone (PES) membrane-equipped Stericup® filter offers a dependable solution for worry-free expansion of embryonic stem cells, even through multiple filtration stages.
