Changing Science: The Evolution and Revolution of PCR

The Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conceived in 1983 as a method to copy DNA. Over the next two years, a team of Cetus scientists researched, refined and made the theoretical process a reality.
In 1991, Roche bought the rights to PCR and invested in refining the science for use in diagnostics to detect diseases. Since then, Roche Molecular Diagnostics has developed numerous tests to identify diseases as well as create the first opportunity to monitor viral load and inform treatment through a diagnostic tool.
