Oxygen kinetics in anemia, critical care, and ECMO

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has seen exponential growth in recent years and serves as a functioning heart and lung machine for patients with cardiac and/or respiratory failure. Its primary purpose is to allow the lungs and heart to rest while providing oxygenation to vital organs.

ECMO can be used for various pathologies, which may require either venovenous (VV) or venoarterial (VA) for the support of the patient. ECMO is a supportive treatment and can represent a ‘bridge’ either to healing of vital organs, to long-term devices or to organ replacement. In this webinar, Dr. Robert H. Bartlett, Professor Emeritus, Acute Care Surgery, University of Michigan Medical School, will discuss how oxygen content is the only important measure of oxygen in blood in ECMO patients.

Key learning objectives

  • Understand the relation of PO2, hemoglobin, saturation, and O2 content in physiology and ECMO
  • Discover why oxygen content is the only important measure of oxygen in blood in ECMO patients
  • The role of anemia in ECMO patients

Who should attend?

  • Cardiac specialists, perfusionists, cardiac nurses, ICU clinicians, lab director, medical clinicians, and laboratory staff

Certificate of attendance
All webinar participants can request a certificate of attendance, including a learning outcomes summary, for continuing education purposes.
