ATP-binding cassette sub-family A member 4 (Retinal-specific ATP-binding cassette transporter, ABCA4, Rim Protein) facilitates the transfer of N-retinyl-phosphatidylethanolamine (NR-PE), a covalent adduct of all-trans retinaldehyde (ATR) with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), to the cytoplasmic surface of rod photoreceptors. ABCA4 functions as a flippase, which is a transmembrane protein that “flips” its conformation to transport materials across a membrane.
