Description
AIRE (Autoimmune regulator, APECED, Autoimmune polyendocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy) is a DNA-binding transcriptional regulator that promotes the expression of tissue-specific self-antigens in the thymus, which is important for self tolerance and the avoidance of autoimmune reactions. AIRE functions as a dimer or as a tetramer and interacts with nucleosomes, selectively interacting with histone H3 unmodified in the N-terminus through its first of two PHD domains. Defects in AIRE are a cause of autoimmune poly-endocrinopathy candidiasis ectodermal dystrophy (APECED) also known as autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type I (APS-1).
