Astrocytes (also known collectively as astroglia) are the most plentiful and diverse of the glial cells. They have a characteristic star-shape and are found in the brain. They perform many functions, including biochemical support of endothelial cells which form the blood-brain barrier, the provision of nutrients to the nervous tissue, and a principal role in the repair and scarring process in the brain. This antibody is suitable as an astrocyte marker and for studies associated with their functions, using immunochemical techniques.
