Description

IL-7 is a glycoprotein cytokine initially referred to as pre-B cell growth factor because of its growth-promoting activity for cells early in the B lymphocyte lineage. Subsequent to IL-7 gene cloning and expression, IL-7 was also found to influence the activity of cells in the T lineage.1 IL-7 stimulates the differentiation of multipotent (pluripotent) hematopoietic stem cells into lymphoid progenitor cells. It also stimulates proliferation of all cells in the lymphoid lineage (B and T lymphocytes and NK cells). IL-7 is not only a potent grown stimulus for pre-B cells, but also plays a role in T cell activation.2 IL-7 has significant clinical and biomedical potential, such as cancer therapy and HIV infections.3
