Description

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-9) is also known as growth differentiation factor 2 (GDF2) is a protein that in humans encoded by the GDF2 gene. GDF2 belongs to the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily. BMP9 has a role in inducing and maintaining the ability of embryonal and adult tissues. Unlike with other BMP family proteins, the propeptide does not interfere with the biological activity of BMP9 and remains associated with the mature peptide after proteolytic cleavage. Another suggested role of BMP-9 could be a potent inducer of hepcidin in liver cells and could regulate iron metabolism. Mature human and mouse BMP-9 share 96% amino acid sequence identity.
