Clone TY/23 is a 69 kD GPI-anchored cell-surface protein. CD73 plays a significant role in the immunosuppressive activity of regulatory T cells, and is involved in the duration, magnitude, and chemical nature of extracellular signaling to immune cells mediated by the conversion of AMP to adenosine, a potent immunosuppressor. This conversion fuels a transition from an ATP-driven proinflammatory environment to an anti-inflammatory environment stimulated by adenosine. Because CD73 is over expressed in various types of tumors, a targeted blockade of CD73 can liberate anti-tumor T cells from the immunosuppressive effects of extracellular adenosine. Furthermore, studies indicate tumor-derived CD73 enhances the production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by tumor cells, and that targeted blockade of CD73 with mAbs significantly decreased tumor VEGF levels suppressing tumor angiogenesis In vivo. Hence, it is suspected that targeted blockade of CD73 may significantly block tumor angiogenesis.
