CD126 (IL-6Rα) is an 80 kD type I cytokine receptor α chain that is a member of the Ig superfamily that can form a heterodimer with IL-6Rβ chain to form the high affinity IL-6 receptor. The IL-6/IL-6R complex is a potent pleiotropic cytokine that mediates cell growth and differentiation and has significant involvement in immune response. Inadequate production of IL-6 and IL-6R are thought to play a part in the pathogenesis of many diseases, such as multiple myeloma, autoimmune diseases and prostate cancer.
