Description
The bone Gla protein (BGP or osteocalcin) is a vitamin K-dependent calcium-binding protein synthesized by osteoblasts and found primarily in bone (1-2% of total bone proteins). Serum BGP measurement provides a noninvasive specific marker for bone metabolism. BGP, which contains 3 gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) residues, binds to hydroxyapatite in presence of calcium and promotes calcium accumulation in the bone matrix.
