Bub1 is a serine-threonine protein kinase and an important regulator of cell division. It is essential for the G2/M mitotic spindle assembly/integrity checkpoint as well as critical for chromosome alignment. Bub1 is required for the assembly of a large number of proteins at the kinetochore, including CENP-E, CENP-F, BUB1B, MAD2L1 and PLK1. It plays a role in sister chromatid cohesion and it serves as a substrate for the anaphase-promoting complex. Bub1 mediates cell death in response to chromosome mis-segregation and acts to suppress spontaneous tumorigenesis.
