The CD58 (HI58a) antibody recognizes a 55-70 kDa membrane glycoprotein known as the lymphocyte function associated antigen-3 (LFA-3). CD58 antigen has wide distribution over many tissues, both hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic cells, including leukocytes, erythrocytes, endothelial cells, epithelial cells and fibroblasts. There are two isoforms of CD58 antigen: a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)- anchor form and a transmembrane form. Both forms are expressed on the same cell type, however erythrocytes only have the GPI- anchored isoform. CD58 is an adhesion molecule that binds to CD2 for cell signaling to T cells and NK cells.
