CID (Centromer Identifier) is the Drosophila histone H3 variant which replaces canonical H3 in centromeric chromatin at the inner plate of the kinetochore (similar to mammalian CENP-A). CID is required for recruitment and assembly of kinetochore proteins, mitotic progression and chromosome segregation. It may serve as an epigenetic mark that propagates centromere identity through DNA replication and cell division.
