Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a synthetic nonsteroidal estrogen first synthesized in 1938. Diethylstilbestrol was commonly used under the assumption that it would help reduce pregnancy complications and losses. The US FDA withdrew DES from use in pregnant women due to its association with a rare form of vaginal cancer.
